Old Socks' Ramblings (Independence)

Happy 4th of July!!!! Today we celebrate our 235th birthday nationally. There have been many celebrations over the last few days with more today and tonight. This event caused me to think about independence. As a child, we long to be independent. We strive to walk so that we won't be dependant on some one to carry us. We want the training wheels off of our bikes to be free to go where we please. As a teenager we long to be independent of parental and authoritative control. As adults we struggle to be indenpendant with health and wealth. Then, as our bodies age, we struggle again to stay independent as we live out our final years.
As I think about these things, I realized how truly dependant we are even in our independence. I desire to be independant in three areas of life.
I desire to be an independent character. We all want to be our own idividual, but the more we become unique, the more we owe to others. You see, each person, good and not so good, that comes through our lives impact us and mold into the different, independant character we are.
I also desire to be an independent citizen.  As Americans, we are guaranteed the rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. To this opportunity, I am dependant upon those who have given and still give of themslves in service to our country so that I might have the freedom to say and do as I see fit. So, to be and idenpendent citizen, I am dependent on the sacrifice of others.
Lastly, I desire to be an idependent christian. No, I'm not saying that I don't need God. The independence I long for is the freedom to be who I was created and am called to be. In my pursuit of Christian freedom, I find myself more and more dependant on the one who came and died that I might live and go. You see, Jesus paid a debt He didn't owe because I owed a debt I couldn't pay.
I hope that as we celebrate our Independence Day, we will all remember how great a debt of gratitude we owe to the soldier and the Savior.
So until we meet again on life's highway, live a little, laugh a lot, love more and ride safe!!
